How to Increase Fuel Mileage in a Diesel Vehicle

Since diesel fuel cost has surpassed unleaded fuel in many cases, it is especially important for a diesel driver to look for ways to increase their fuel economy. Increasing a diesel engine’s fuel mileage is pretty similar to increasing fuel economy of an unleaded gas engine.

  • Add a Cetane improver to the fuel in your diesel. This can give you an increase in horse power and give you more miles to the gallon. The Cetane additive can remove and prevent corrosion that can happen within the diesel’s fuel injectors and tank.

  • Have the exhaust system checked. If the exhaust system is in poor condition, it may cause your engine to work harder and use more gas. Speak with several diesel mechanics to find the best price and service, or do the work yourself to save money.

  • Drive slower, and avoid sudden acceleration. Stop-and-go driving eats up more gas than driving at a nice, even pace. When you drive in the city, you’re likely to encounter more stops at lights. Find alternate routes that allow you to drive without stopping, and ease down on the gas pedal when accelerating.

  • Take out any heavy objects that you’re not planning on using during your trip and store them in a shed or garage. Many construction workers keep heavy tools in the back of their diesel. These tools cause the engine to work harder to pull additional weight. Taking big items like generators and air compressors out of the back of the truck and putting them away not only increases fuel economy, it also protects the expensive equipment from outdoor elements.
