How to Winterize a Diesel Vehicle

There are several things that should be done to your diesel vehicle before the cold weather hits. Winterizing a diesel vehicle improves its performance and makes it safer to drive through the ice and snow. You’ll have to understand how to perform some diesel maintenance to fully winterize your diesel vehicle.

  • Understand that diesel engines need to stay warm to start. Starting the engine cold will cause damage and shorten its life. Install glow plugs yourself or take the vehicle to an auto repair shop to have them put in. These plugs will give the diesel the heat it needs to start properly.

  • Read some reviews for diesel fuel injectors. In extreme cold situations, diesel fuel can turn into a gel-like substance and cause your engine to run poorly. There are diesel fuel injectors that can prevent this from happening to keep the engine burning fuel efficiently during cold winter months.

  • Purchase a set of mud and snow tires. It is likely that you’ll encounter some ice or snow during the winter. Tires with thick tread can roll through icy roads efficiently most likely preventing a person from getting stuck.  After the winter is over, you can switch back to your normal set of tires.

  • Place the diesel inside the garage to keep the engine a little warmer. Some diesels can be plugged into an electrical socket to keep the engine warm.  Keep the garage door closed to hold in extra warmth. This is another way to prevent cold starting your engine.
