How to Increase Vitamin C Intake

Vitamin C is an important vitamin that people need daily. Not only does vitamin C keep countless body systems running normally, it also helps ward off sickness and disease. If you are not getting enough vitamin C, there are several steps you can take to remedy this.

  1. Understand that vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin. This means that your body will not store the vitamin for a long period of time. Because of this, you will need to make sure that you get the proper amount of vitamin C each day.

  2. Eat or drink at least 6 ounces of citrus each day. Grapefruit, oranges and lemons are all helpful to reach this benchmark. Citrus has been used a vitamin C booster since the 1700’s, when British ships used citrus syrup to ward off scurvy. Although you are probably in no danger of contracting scurvy, the practice of utilizing citrus in your diet is still wise.

  3. Eat other foods that are rich in vitamin C. There are several fruits and vegetables that are packed with Vitamin C. Broccoli, sweet potatoes and carrots are just a few examples of vitamin C rich foods.

  4. Take a vitamin supplement daily that contains the daily recommended dose of vitamin C. Not only will this help your vitamin C intake, but will also give your body other important vitamins and minerals. You can also take a vitamin C supplement, however this is usually not necessary. Because vitamin C is water-soluble, taking in too much of it daily can cause diarrhea, so proceed with caution.
