How to Install Flooring in the Garage
If you would like to improve the look and function of your garage floor, installing some interlocking floor cover is a good choice. Garages tend to get messy and build up dirt which will stain the concrete. By placing floor tiles on the garage surface it is much easier to maintain.
Choose Flooring
- Go to a few large hardware or flooring stores to find what you are looking for. Choose the color and style that will work with your home the best.
- Pick up a utility knife, tape measure and chalk line if you don't have them already. These will be used for the installation.
Preperation
- Remove all obstacles on the floor of the garage. Sweep the floor with a regular broom, and then go over it again with a dust mop if one is available.
- Avoid using water to clean areas of the garage floor as this will trap moisture underneath the new flooring mateial.
Garage Floor Installation
- Use the tape measure and find the center of your garage floor. Measure from side to side and end to end.
- Mark the center, and then snap the chalk line in both directions to use as a guide for laying the tiles.
- Lay down the first tile with the edge against the center cross lines. Keep laying tile, growing outwards in a circular motion. Use a mallot, or piece of wood, to aid in locking tiles together tightly.
- Continue laying the garage tiles until you reach the edge. Use your measuring tape to calculate the empty space left, then cut with the utility knife. Use this same technique to finish the perimeter of the garage floor.
