How to Organize the Garage

Organizing your garage properly can provide you with a lot of extra space.  You’ll be able to find anything you need quickly, and your garage will feel much more open.  Pick a date when you have the time to go through the items you are storing in your garage, and throw out anything you don’t need or sell it at a garage sale.

  1. Set time aside to go through everything you currently have in your garage.  People tend to forget that they even own some of the items they are still storing in their garages.  If you haven’t gone through the things you keep in your garage in a long time, you’ll need at least a couple of hours and possibly a few days to get the job done.

  2. Throw out anything you don’t need, or sell it.  While it’s tempting to hold on to old possessions you no longer use, keep in mind that they are taking up a lot of extra space you could be using to store items you actually need.  If you haven’t used or worn something in a year or more, throw it out, or sell it at a garage sale.

  3. Organize your possessions using containers.  One of the biggest reasons why garages tend to be so cluttered is because people don’t have an organization system in place.  As a result, things become scattered on the floor or thrown into random boxes.  One quick way you can drastically cut down on the clutter in your garage is to get a few storage containers specifically designed for that purpose.  Store similar items together, so you can easily find them in the future.  Another advantage to using storage containers is that they’ll protect your possessions from damage.

  4. Clean your garage frequently.  To keep your garage clean and organized in the future, avoid falling into the same routine of using it to store things you don’t need.  Keeping your garage neat requires a commitment from you and any people you live with.
