How to Install Garage Floor Tiles

How to Install Garage Floor

Materials Needed

  • Push broom

  • Large bucket

  • Water

  • Liquid dish detergent

  • Garden hose

  • Chalk

  • Thinset mortar

  • Tiles

  • Trowel

  • Utility knife

  • Grout

  • Grout float

  • Sponge mop

  • Spacers

  1. Sweep the entire floor with a push broom. Add 2 gallons of water to a large bucket and pour in ¼ cup of liquid dish detergent. Use the solution and a push broom to scrub the area. Rinse the floor with water from a garden hose and allow it to completely dry.

  2. Locate the center of the floor and place a chalk line there. This is where you will start installing the tile. Prepare the thinset mortar in a bucket. Follow the instructions on the package to blend the mortar for the project.

  3. Apply a small amount of mortar to the floor with a trowel. Only apply enough to work on three or four tiles at one time. Spread the mortar out. Press the tiles into the mortar. Use spacers to even lay the tiles.

  4. Continue applying the mortar and tiles until the entire garage floor is complete. Once you reach the edges, use a utility knife to cut the tiles so they can fit. Allow the mortar to dry for 24 hours.

  5. Mix the grout. Use a grout float to pack the grout in between the tiles. Remove any excess grout with the grout float. Allow the area to dry for 24 hours. Wipe over the floor with a damp sponge mop and allow the floor to dry for several hours.
