How to Install Home Replacement Windows

Replacing your windows can be quite expensive, but it will end up saving you money in the long run. Updating your windows will make your home more energy efficient saving you money on future heating costs. It can also save you money upfront if you can install them yourself.

  1. Choose the type of replacement window you want for your home. The material choices include vinyl, wood or composite and are available in a variety of styles like single-hung, double-hung and casement.

  2. Gather the materials and tools needed for the job. You will need the following tools: reciprocating saw, hammer and nail set, utility knife, pry bar and finishing nails. You will also need caulk gun, caulking, level, tape measure and several drop cloths.

  3. Check your window sill for damage. Your replacement windows will not fit properly if the surrounding area is rotted. If you notice rotting then you will need to repair this area before replacing the windows.

  4. Take the window stops off your old window. If you can take them off without damaging them then you can use them for the new window. Clean the frame of any dirt and debris.

  5. Caulk the frame and window sill. Use a generous amount of caulking along the edges and the inside of the window sill.

  6. Install the replacement window. Use screws to attach the new window and frame in place. Once the windows are set in, test them to make sure that all of the levers are working correctly and that you can open and close it without any problems. Insert the window stops back inside. Next, caulk your windows to make sure that no water is able to seep in. This will prevent mold build-up.
