How to Install Leaf Gutters
Leaf gutters, or leaf guards, are filters that attach to gutters and prevent leaves, sticks and debris from entering your gutters. Leaf guards are an effective and inexpensive way to prevent damage to gutters. Because leaf guards keep debris from the gutters, they are less likely to become clogged and much easier to clean.
Items needed:
- Ladder
- Knife
- Water hose
- Leaf guards
Step 1: Clean your gutters thoroughly. Remove any sticks, leaves or debris and use a water hose to flush the gutters with water. You want to make sure the gutters are completely clean before installing the leaf guards.
Step 2: Use a tape measure to measure the gutters. Write down the measurement and take it with you to the home improvement store to purchase the leaf guards. Leaf guards are normally sold in four foot sections. Purchase the appropriate amount of leaf guards for your gutters.
Step 3: Use a knife to cut the leaf guards into smaller sections if necessary. Be sure to cut them so that the edges are smooth and even.
Step 4: Lean a ladder against the house. Be sure that the ladder is steady and on flat ground. Climb the ladder and bring the first leaf guard up to the roof. Lay the leaf guard on top of the gutter. Slide the top of the leaf guard under the bottom row of roof shingles. The leaf guard will clip over the inner lip of the gutter. Clip the other end of the leaf guard to the outer lip of the gutter. Gently pull up on the gutter guard to make sure it is secure. Repeat this process to install all of the leaf guards to the gutters.
Step 5: Be sure to check your leaf guards regularly to make sure they are not broken and are working properly. You will need to clean them out a few times a year. If you find a broken or damaged leaf guard, replace it immediately to prevent damage to the other leaf guards and gutters.
