How to Install Leaf Protection for Gutters
Gutters help protect your home by moving water away from the roof and walls and channeling it to a drain. Large sticks, leaves and debris can fall into your gutters and cause clogs that prevent water from draining properly. When water doesn't drain properly, it can cause major damage to your home. Leaf protection will help keep gutters clear and functioning properly.
Step 1: Place a ladder against the side of your home. Check to make sure the ground where the ladder is standing is level. If the ladder is not on level ground, it may tip over and cause you to fall and get injured. You may want to ask another person to hold the ladder while you are installing the leaf protection on the gutters.
Step 2: Use your hands to remove any sticks, leaves or other debris from the gutters. You may want to wear gloves to protect your hands. Use a water hose to flush the gutters and remove any other dirt and debris. It is important to clean your gutters before installing the leaf protection, otherwise the gutters could become clogged.
Step 3: Use a tape measure to measure each section of gutters. Cut the leaf protection to fit each section of the gutter. Be sure the edges are cut even so they fit together easily. If the edges are not cut evenly, it can cause gaps which will allow debris to enter and clog the gutters.
Step 4: Lay the leaf protection on top of the gutters. The inner edge of the leaf protection will need to snap on the inner lip of the gutters. The inner lip of the gutters is located under the bottom row of roof shingles. The outer edge of the leaf protection should snap onto the outer edge of the gutters. Pull up gently on the leaf protection to make sure it is securely fastened to the gutters. Repeat this process to install each section of leaf protection to the gutters.
Step 5: Clean the leaf protection once every two to three months. To clean the leaf protection, simply remove it from the gutters. Use your hands to remove any debris that the leaf protection has caught. Use a water hose to spray the leaf protection to help remove any grime that may be stuck to them. Replace the leaf protection when you have finished cleaning it.
