How to Install Metal Railings on Concrete Front Door Steps
Most city ordinances require a railing for a stairs in sets of more than three. Check with your local building department as required heights for stair rails vary. Typically stair rails are attached to the right side of the stairs.
Railings can add safety and curb appeal to many homes. Installation of metal stair railings is not as complex as one might think. Stair railings can be purchased in kits, and anyone with moderate do it yourself skills can complete the project in relatively short order.
- Using a tape measure, mark the distance between your metal railing’s vertical balusters on the right side of the stairs. Once the marks are made, drill pilot holes using a masonry bit. The metal railing brackets should be used as guides as to where to drill as you proceed with the installation.
- Position the metal brackets over the top of the newly drilled pilot holes. Once the holes are lined up, fasten the metal brackets to the stairs using masonry anchors and screws.
- Install the vertical balusters into the metal brackets. Once positioned, tighten the set screws until the railing is secure and level.
- Assemble the railings according to the specifications for the specific railing set that you purchased. Begin with the top and bottom rails. If your railing set requires them, proceed to the intermediate rails. Secure each section in place by setting the screws and then tightening them until the sections are secure.
