How to Install New Gutters at Home

Gutters are a very important addition to a home to prevent water damage. Most homeowners fail to install or replace their gutters and end up having to pay costly repairs that could have been avoided. Installing new gutters might not be a simple task, but it is an important one to say the least. Before getting started on installing new gutters at home, ensure you have the proper tools and equipment readily available.

Equipment:

  • Gutters

  • Downspouts

  • Miters

  • Pipe bands

  • Slip joint connectors

  • Gutter sealant

Tools:

  • Hammer

  • Ladder

  • Drill

  • Pliers

  • Flathead screw driver

  • Tape measure

  • Chalkline and pencil

  1. Select the type of gutter channels and downspouts desired. The most common types are half-round, framed, and ogee. Gutters come in sizes ranging anywhere from 4 to 6 inch diameters, and made with aluminum, vinyl, and galvanized steel. The most commonly used downspouts are 2x3 inches in diameter.

  2. Use the measuring tape to measure across the fascia since this is where the actual gutter will be installed.

  3. Use the chalkline to snap a line across the fascia for proper placement of the gutter.

  4. Use a pencil to mark the slopes, which should be one inch per 20 ft toward the downspout.

  5. Assemble the gutters and make sure they fit the measurements of the fascia.

  6. Apply the slip connectors to the ends of the gutters sealant.

  7. Align the gutter to the fascia. Hold the gutter in place as you use a screwdriver to secure the gutter to the fascia. Join each gutter with a miter and the necessary end pieces.

  8. Seal the gutters. Once gutter has been installed, use gutter sealant over the joints.
