How to Install New Gutter Leaf Guard

Gutter guards help keep leaves, sticks and other debris out of gutters. If gutters become blocked or clogged, water cannot properly drain from the roof. This can lead to flooded attics or roof leaks. Installing gutter guards on all of your gutters will help prevent gutters from being clogged and allow them to drain water properly.

Items Needed

  • Hose

  • Tape measure

  • Gutter guards

  • Ladder

Step 1: Remove any dirt, debris and leaves from your gutters. Clean them thoroughly with a hose, directing the water towards the downspout.

Step 2: Use a tape measure to measure the length and width of your gutters. Measure from one end of the house the other.

Step 3: Purchase enough gutter guards to protect all of your gutters. Gutter guards can be purchased from most home improvement stores.

Step 4: Bring the purchased gutter guards home and cut them into sections. Since you will be using a ladder to reach the gutters, smaller sections will be easier to carry and install.

Step 5: Gently lift up on the bottom row of roof shingles. Slide one edge of the gutter guard underneath the shingles and attach it to the edge of the gutter. The gutter guard will snap into place.

Step 6: Slide the other edge of the gutter guard onto the opposite side of the gutter. Press down gently to snap it into place.

Step 7: Gently pull up on the gutter guard to make sure the gutter guard it is securely attached to the gutter.

Step 8: Repeat these steps until you have installed gutter guards on all of your gutters.

Step 9: Check your gutter guards at least once a month to make sure they are keeping the debris out of your gutters.
