How to Install Paving Stones

Installing paving stones can be a great finishing touch to the landscape design in your yard. It really makes your landscaping stand out and sets it apart from the rest of the neighborhood. Installing the stones is a fairly easy task once the ground has been prepared.

  1. Create a sketch of your design. This will make your task that much easier by having a prototype. It will also let you know how many pavers and other materials you need to purchase instead of flying blind at the home improvement store. Taking your sketch with you to the home improvement store is also a good idea so that you choose the size and style you want for the pavers.

  2. Get your ground area ready. Outline the area with stakes and string. When digging, go out four more inches on each side than what your sketch dictates. This way you will have the extra room needed for the base. Allow for proper drainage by sloping your project away from driveways or patios. Your slope needs to be at least 1/8 per linear foot. Place your stakes at least 3 feet away from each other.

  3. Apply the base materials. Put in half the amount of the crushed stone. Wet it, and use a hand tamper to solidify it. Fill in any areas and tamper again until the stone is compact.

  4. Use spikes to put in the edge restraints. If you are designing a curved path then you may need to trim the restraints so that they fit properly.

  5. Install the pavers. Lay them at an angle, preferably 90 degrees if possible. Continue to lay the pavers in the direction of your sketched design. If any pavers need to be cut, use a wet saw.
