How to Lay a Block Paving Driveway
Homeowners wanting to build a concrete driveway without the work of a traditional concrete pour can accomplish their goal with the use of block pavers. These require very limited maintenance and are very durable. Homeowners with basic construction knowledge can install a block paver driveway themselves.
Supplies
- Tape measure
- Level
- Spray can of marking paint
- Square shovel or Bobcat
- Tamping tool
- Two x four-inch stud
- Two x eight-inch boards
- Gravel
- Sand
- Broom
- Cement sealant
- Assistant
- Measure out the area where your driveway is to be installed.
- Mark the perimeter with a spray can of yellow marking paint.
- Dig the foundation of the driveway using the square bucket of a Bobcat. This will make a clean straight edge cut on the topsoil. The excavation should slope one-half inch per foot away from any structure. This will provide the proper drainage for your driveway project.
- Install two by eight-inch boards around the perimeter of your driveway inside the excavated area. It should be level with the ground.
- Fill the excavated area of the foundation with a base of four inches of #57 or three quarter-inch stones. Compact the stone with your tamping tool.
- Pour a layer of sand over the gravel and use your shovel to spread the sound out. The sand should be as level as possible. Use a two by eight-inch stud and an assistant to screed the sand until it is level.
- Begin at the corner, and set the first block paver into the sand bed. Tamp it firmly into place; use a rubber mallet if necessary.
- Check its placement with your level.
- Sweep a layer of mason sand between the pavers with a broom, when the pavers have all been installed.
- Coat the drive with concrete sealant to help protect the block pavers from deterioration from the elements. This will also help to hold the sand between the pavers.
