How to Install Roofing Shingles
One of the best ways to improve the appearance of your roof and protect your home against the elements is by installing new shingles. You can complete this project without hiring a professional, which can save you money. It is important to know the proper method for installing new shingles to ensure the job is done right.
- Look for any limbs, nails or other such debris that may be sticking out of your roof. These things will need to be either fixed or replaced before you can do any further work.
- Use a staple gun to staple the felt to your roof. Make sure that the edges overlap by at least two inches to ensure that your roof is properly protected from the weather.
- Use a chalk line to mark the center of your roof. Draw a line from this point to each edge of your roof.
- Lay down a strip of shingles along each edge of your roof. Leave 5/8 inch hanging over the edge of your roof. This will be your guide as you lay down the rest of your shingles.
- Starting at the center point that you chalked out, place shingles on your starter strip.
- Use roofing nails to secure each shingle. Make sure to bump each new shingle against the previous one that you laid. Follow this pattern from the starter strip to each edge.
- Use roof cement to seal all of your ridgings, flashings and edgings.
