How to Install Vinyl Flooring Over Old Flooring

It is possible to install vinyl flooring over old flooring especially if the old flooring is also vinyl. By using this method to install your flooring you could save a considerable amount of time and energy. If your old flooring is severely damaged however you should consider removing it first.

Supplies:

  • Mop

  • Bucket

  • Cleanser

  • New vinyl flooring

  • Nails

  • Stripping with hardware

  • Utility knife

  • Hammer

  • Screwdriver

  1. Determine your dimensions of your existing flooring before you purchase your new vinyl flooring. Make a selection that is best for your living space and make a final purchase from a local flooring dealer.

  2. Clean your old flooring with your preferred cleanser and hot water. Fill up your mop bucket with a combination of hot water and your preferred cleanser. Begin mopping this flooring from one end to the other. Rinse the flooring with clean hot water from your sink. Allow the flooring to completely dry before continuing.

  3. Consider using padding if you are covering tile. You could purchase padding from any local carpet dealer at a reasonable price.

  4. Begin rolling out your vinyl flooring over the old flooring. Cut the vinyl flooring to fit using your utility knife. Ensure that each edge is a tight fit and flush against the wall.

  5. Secure your vinyl flooring with nails around the edges using your hammer. Ensure that there are not any ripples or bulges in the vinyl flooring before securing it with the nails. Repeat this step for all sections of the vinyl flooring.

  6. Install the stripping along the edges. Using the tacks that came with your stripping secure each section by tightening these screws with your screwdriver.
