How to Install Window Curtains
Installing window curtains at the correct level and height can appear tricky. Once you decide on the curtain style you want, you can check with your home improvement store’s salespersons for the appropriate hardware needed for installation. Hardware will come with full instructions for installation.
What You Need:
- Hammer
- Screwdriver
- Curtain hardware, screws and anchors
- Pencil to mark hardware placement
- Design your curtain treatment and purchase the appropriate hardware to install window curtains.
- Measure the window’s width. Make the curtain rod at least five inches longer than the window. Although you may place the curtain over the window frame, place the rod beyond the frame of the drywall for greater visual appeal.
- Mark the location for the curtain hooks. Use a tape measure and measure outwards from the edge of the window frame. Use a pencil to mark two inches from the window frame for the installation of the brackets. The rods will extend past the brackets.
- Level the curtain rod hardware marks on each side of the window.
- Mark and pre-drill for the hardware anchors. Should you hit a stud beyond the drywall, you can attach the hardware directly using the screws. Otherwise, if you do not hit a stud, use drywall anchors for installation of the hardware.
- Hammer in the anchors flush with the walls.
- Insert the screws part-way into the anchors.
- Install the brackets hardware and finish tightening the screws.
- Test out the installed hardware with a set of curtains.
- Check for a leveled bar and that the curtains provide the coverage you planned.
