How to Install a Lawn Mower Battery

Installing a lawn mower battery is one of the easiest things to do for your mower. No special knowledge is required, and you only need a few common household tools. Before installing a new battery, check your owner's manual to make sure you have the right size battery for your lawn mower.

Items Needed

  • socket set

  • wrenches

  • screwdriver

  • small wire brush

  • baking soda

  • water

  • clean rag

  1. Check your owner's manual to be sure you have the right battery to install on your lawn mower.

  2. Locate the battery on your lawn mower. Depending on your mower, it may be under the hood or under the seat.

  3. Take the old battery out of your mower. Remove the nuts that attach the battery cables to the battery by using either a socket or a wrench. Remove the battery cables and lay them aside. Check for any hardware that might be holding the old battery in place. If there is any, take that hardware off with either a screwdriver or a wrench. Lift the old battery out of the lawn mower.

  4. Make a paste of one part baking soda to one part water. Apply this paste to the battery cable ends. Scrub with a small wire brush. This will clean your connections and remove any build up. Wipe the paste residue off the cable ends with a clean dry rag.

  5. Lower the new battery into place.

  6. Connect the black battery cable, negative, to the post on the battery that is marked as negative or black.

  7. Connect the red battery cable, positive, to the post on the battery that is marked as positive or red.

  8. Tighten the nuts on the battery connectors with a socket or wrench.

  9. Reattach any hardware that anchored the old battery in place.
