How to Install a Linksys Wireless Broadband Router

Using a wireless router can be a great way to get Internet access throughout a whole building without having to worry about the placement of wires or cables. One popular brand of wireless router that is both affordable and inexpensive is Linksys.

What You Will Need

  • Linksys wireless router

  • Ethernet cable

  • Linksys installation CD

  • Modem

  1. Turn off the computer, modem and router.

  2. Use an Ethernet wire to connect the router to the computer. The wire should connect to the single Ethernet port on the back of the computer and can be placed in any of the four ports on the back of the router.

  3. Use a second Ethernet wire to connect the modem to the router. The wire needs to be placed in the port labeled “In” or “Internet” on the wireless router.

  4. Plug the adapter for the router into a nearby outlet.

  5. Turn the power to the modem, the router and the computer.

  6. Place the Linksys installation CD into the computer and follow the prompts that appear. During this step you will have to create a password to allow access to the router.

  7. Disconnect the Ethernet cable from the computer and the router.

  8. Have your computer search for wireless networks.

  9. Find your wireless network on the list of available networks and select it.

  10. Enter the password you created in one of the previous steps to connect to the network.
