How to Replace a Mulching Mower Blade

How to Install a Mower Mulching Blade

Most modern types of lawn mowers can do more than just mow the lawn. Many have mulching blades that can replace the regular blade. Mulching blades cut and chop up the grass clippings into smaller pieces that can be used in different landscaping projects.

  1. Visit the store where you purchased the mower or a store that sells mower parts such as Sears. Order or purchase the mulch blade that is designed for your type of mower. A store associate can assist you in this process.

  2. Turn off the mower and remove the key. Flip it on its side to access the bottom of it.

  3. Use your hands to unscrew the screw on the bottom of the mower that holds the blade to the mower base. Set the screw aside in a safe place. Be attentive to which direction the sharp side of the blade is facing. You may want to use a permanent marker to draw an arrow facing the right direction so you can reference it later.

  4. Attach the mulching blade to the bottom of the mower. Use the screw to screw it into place securely. The sharp edge of the mulching blade should be facing the same direction that the regular blade was facing.

  5. Flip the mower back over. Use a screwdriver to remove the screws that hold the grass chute in place. Place the mulch attachment where the grass chute once was. Use a screwdriver to screw in the screws that hold it in place. This attachment will keep the grass underneath the mower, allowing it to become mulched.
