How to Install a New Auto Battery
Installing a new auto battery is a very easy task that even one with no mechanical experience can accomplish in just a few short minutes. The key is to make sure the cables are connected to the correct terminal posts.
Items needed:
- Wrench
- Wool brush
- Find the battery. This is located underneath the hood of the automobile.
- Remove the cables from the battery. There are two cables one black and one red. Loosen the nuts holding the cables on the battery, and remove the clamp over the battery.
- Take the old battery out of the car. Carefully pick up the old battery and pull up out the tray to remove it from the car. Complete this step with caution as dead and older batteries can lead dangerous battery acid, and you do not want this to come in contact with your skin.
- Clean the battery location. You want to remove any battery acid or erosion from the battery tray and clamps. You can do this with wool brush. Once again use caution is battery acid is present.
- Set the new battery in the car. Place the new battery in the cleaned location and place the cables on the correct terminal post.
- Tighten the cables. Make sure the nuts are tightened enough to keep the cables connected to the battery.
- Test the battery. You vehicle should crank up without any hesitation. If you are not able to get you vehicle to crank check the cables' positioning. If everything is hooked up correctly, the battery may not be good.
