How to Install a Stereo in a GMC Sierra
If the stereo in your GMC stops working, or if you want to replace it with a new one, you will need to know how to install one. Stereos are easy to install and simple tools are involved. Depending on the new stereo, you may need to use a mounting kit to help with the installation.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery under the hood of the GMC Sierra. This prevents you from getting shocked or from causing a short as you are installing the stereo.
- Use a flat screwdriver to pry off the dash panel. Gently pull it away from the dash until it pops off. Set it aside.
- Press down on the levers on each side of the factory stereo. Slide the stereo straight out to remove it.
- Unplug the wires from behind the stereo, and allow them to hang out through the opening.
- Connect the wiring harness to the new stereo. Connect the antenna cable.
- Place the new stereo up to the opening. Slide the stereo mounting kit over the stereo and onto the dash of the car.
- Position the stereo so it fits inside the mounting kit and stereo slot.
- Place the dash panel up to the dash. Gently press it into the dash until it snaps into place.
- Connect the negative battery cable back to the battery.
- Start the car and test the stereo. Check that all the radio stations come in correctly and that the tape player or CD player is working properly. If it is not, you will need to check that the wires are connected properly.
