How to Insulate Steel Buildings
Insulation is essential in a steel building. A building that is well insulated will keep the interior cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Installing quality insulation is a great way to keep energy costs low while keeping the interior of the building at a comfortable temperature.
Items needed:
- Insulation
- Double-sided tape
- Ladder
- Wall sheeting
- Metal tape
- Primer
- Paint
- Select the type of insulation you want to use. Pick the highest R-value (thickness) insulation that is available. Insulation with a high R-value will be more effective in keeping heat in during the winter and cool air in during the summer. Also look for insulation with a reflective exterior, which is more effective than fiberglass insulation alone.
- Begin the installation of the insulation. Apply the double sided tape to the steel frame of the building. Unroll the insulation, making sure that the reflective side is face up.
- Attach the insulation to the double sided tape. The reflective side of the insulation should face into the building. Make sure to place the insulation in the walls and in the ceiling. Use caution with the ladder when insulating the ceiling. Enlist the help of a friend to secure the ladder and to assist as needed. Do not pull the insulation tight. You need to leave a small amount of air space.
- Apply a layer of wall sheeting over the insulation and use the metal tape to keep everything in place.
- Texturize the wall sheeting, prime it, and paint it the color of your choice. If you used a high quality insulation, it should last many years.
