How to Join Trade Associations

Trade associations exist for a variety of reasons. Their primary goal is to set industry standards within a specific industry. They also serve as a great way for networking, fundraising and organizing an event. There are thousands of different trade associations, both domestic and international, and they each follow a particular set of rules and regulations.

1. Research your industry. You want to join a trade organization that represents the field that you are in. For instance, if you are a chemical engineer it would not make sense for you to join a trade association that is geared toward nurses. Search your local chamber of commerce or the business section of your local phone book for a list of trade associations.

2. Make a list of organizations. Once you have narrowed down your selection, do a comparison of each association and what they offer. Are they targeted toward your industry? Do they provide networking opportunities? What sort of effect do they have on the industry?

3. Set up a meeting with industry leaders. After you select the association that you want to join, get in contact with the leaders of the association and schedule a business lunch. It is a good way to get your foot in the door.

4. Visit the website for the association. All trade associations have websites that detail the specifics of the organization. Any questions that you might have would be found on the site. Note what the requirements are for membership and prepare your application.

5. Submit your application. Fill out all necessary paperwork, enclose the application fee and mail it in for further processing.
