How to Lay Bathroom Flooring
Installing a new floor in a bathroom can be a bit of a challenge. You'll typically have to contend with strange angles, fixtures and toilets. Most people can lay bathroom flooring in just a weekend provided the right tools are on hand and enough time is allowed.
When laying any bathroom flooring you will need to keep a few things in mind. Because the moisture is going to be an issue you will be limited to the types of flooring that you can choose. Vinyl is an option but will need to be replaced and repaired more often. Hard tile is often your best bet when it comes to bathroom flooring.
What You’ll Need:
- Grout
- Sponge
- Tape Measure
- Grout Float
- Notched Trowel
- Adjustable Wrench
- Mortar
- Chalk Snap Line
- Tile Saw
- Spacers
- Disconnect and turn off the water line to take out the toilet. Leave just the open toilet drain to work around.
- Use a chalk snap line to properly divide up your floor into 4 different squares. Use thinset mortar to cover the space needed for about 4 tiles to start out with. Spread it on in the middle of the chalk line intersection.
- Press down the tiles one at a time onto the mortar. Put down the spacers in between each one. Once you have these 4 laid, you can move on with more mortar and more tiles. Be sure that you put spacers between each of the tiles. Measure the tiles and cut them with your tile saw when you get to the area where the toilet goes and to your tub.
- Give the mortar overnight to dry and then take the spacers out. You can spread grout down over the floor using your grout float. Be sure to force the grout to go down between the spaces on your tiles. Give it 48 hours to dry before putting your toilet back in.
