How to Lay Outdoor Tiles
Tiles can be used for a patio or deck in your backyard. Outdoor tiles add a nice modern and decorative look to any outdoor space. If you are a handy person you can save money and time by laying your own outdoor tiles.
Things you'll need:
- Tape measure
- Laser layout tool
- Tile
- Grout
- Level
- Marking pens
- Tile spacers
- Tile cutter
- Trowel
- Rubber mallet
- Knee pads
- Measure the area you will be laying tile to know how much tile you will need to use. Tiles come in many different sizes so when you design your project make sure to include measurements for the grout space. Any sloping areas should lead to a drain, if applicable.
- Choose from porcelain, stone, or ceramic outdoor tile. Use a color scheme that matches your backyard design. Make sure to choose materials that are suitable for your climate.
- Prepare the surface of either the patio or deck where you will lay the outdoor tile. Clean the masonry or concrete to make sure that the tile glue and mortar will bond properly.
- Glue the tile to the surface using a pattern that you have decided on. Make sure to use spacers to save enough room for the grout.
- Apply the grout to the tiles and let it set. Allow enough time for it to completely set. Use a wet cloth to polish and remove excess grout on the tile. Let it set once more, and enjoy your new outdoor tile.
