How to Make an Outdoor Tile Table

Many people like tile tables for their outdoor furniture because it is simple to care for and it can be outside no matter what time of season. These tile tables can be created over an existing table for convenience as well as extra durability.

  1. Clean the surface of the table so that there is no dirt, moss or anything else on the tabletop. If the table has any rust on the surface, use a piece of sand paper to remove it so that the tiles will sit cleanly on the surface.

  2. Select the type of tiles that you want to use. You can choose to use smaller, mosaic glass or ceramic tiles or you can use larger tiles such as the kind that you would see on the floor.

  3. Set the tiles on the table the way that you want them. Do not glue them down yet. This is just the preliminary design stage where you are going to pace them how you want them and do any cutting of the tiles that may not sit flat on the tabletop.

  4. Once you have the design laid out on the table how you like them, begin gluing them down. Make sure that you leave space between the tiles so that the grout can be laid.

  5. Mix the grout according to the package. Do not add extra cement mix or water to the mixture or it will not set properly. Wear gloves when you mix the grout. It contains lye and other chemicals that can eat at your skin.

  6. Lay the grout between the tiles. It is okay if some of it gets on the tiles as it will be easily removed with a wet rag. Make sure that the grout is level with the tops of the tiles.

  7. Clean up the tops of the tables and allow to dry overnight. Your outdoor tile table should be dry and ready for use the next day.
