How to Learn Lawn Mower Repair

Learning lawn mower repair can be helpful whether you have a small yard or a very large one. This is because you may need to use a variety of equipment in order to maintain your lawn, and repairs can often be costly. Making repairs yourself can save you both time and money while keeping your equipment in top shape.

1.  Take a small engine repair course at a community college. This can help you learn to troubleshoot common problems with push mowers, riding mowers, or weed eaters. In the beginning, you may learn about the different types of engines and the major components of each type. After this, you could progress to tearing apart different motors and rebuilding them, which could be helpful if you have very old equipment.

2. Look for an apprenticeship in a lawn mower repair shop. This could expose you to a wide variety of lawn equipment, so you will be familiar with the different models available. In the beginning, you may be asked to sharpen blades, change air filters, or give the mower tune-ups. After you gain some experience, you may be asked to adjust the choke or repair fuel lines.

3. Read lawn mower repair manuals, especially those that have diagrams. The manuals that come with the equipment may have some basic troubleshooting information, but a more detailed guide could be found at your local library. If possible, look for an inexpensive piece of equipment that you can tinker with in order to get practice.  You may be able to find a non-working piece of equipment at a junkyard or by running an advertisement in the newspaper.
