How to Replace the Pull String on a Lawn Mower
The pull string on a lawn mower can eventually break off, because it is constantly pulled in order to start the mower up. Replacing the pull string on your lawn mower is an easy fix, and prevents the need to purchase a new mower. Purchase new string for your lawn mower and replace this functional part yourself.
Supplies You'll Need:
- Utility knife
- Screwdriver
- Pliers
- Measuring tape
- Electrical tape
- String
- Take the spark plug wire off from the plug to prevent the lawn mower from restarting. Use the utility knife to cut any knots in the string to make it easier to get loose.
- Take the screwdriver and unscrew the top part of the lawn mower. Remove the gas tank if it prevents you from reaching the screws to remove the top.
- Untie the old pulling string from the starter pulley. Use a utility knife to cut through any knots to make it easier to remove.
- Take some new string and cut 10 feet of it in order to make sure you have enough string to pull with. Discard any excess string once you have completed the task.
- Thread the string through the starter pulley and tie a knot to secure it. Tape the end of the string with tape in order to hide any excess string.
- Close the pulley into the string at least two times to secure it into place. Thread the end of the string into the hole on the top.
- Replace the top of the lawn mower. Screw up the top tightly to prevent the top from coming undone. Replace the gas tank, if removed.
- Pull the string out far enough to secure it around the bracket on the mower. Thread the string in the hole to secure it in place. Squeeze the handle on the mower around the string and secure it in place with pliers. Cut off any excess string.
