How to Learn Set Design
For the people that are interested in working in theatre or film but don't want to be on camera set design may be the right avenue for them. Even though Set designers work in the background in theatre, film and television their work is still seen by the audience. The best set designers can even win prestigious awards like an Oscar.
- Look at the job description of a set designer. What skills described match the skills that you have? What do you need to work on so that you can become the best set designer possible? Write these down and look for ways to improve your skills. For example, if you don’t have a strong background in design, enroll in a design or art course at a local community college or university.
- Take classes in set design. Most classes available in set or scene design are for junior and senior level college students. These students have likely decided that theatre is their major and that that set design will be their concentration.
- Volunteer at the local community theatre. Many community theatres are constantly looking for people to work on the background for their productions. Talk with the theatre director and express your interest in set design. See if there is any available room for you to come and help. While working on the set ask the lead set designer about their background and what education they went through to learn set design, Keep them available as a contact when looking for other set design ventures.
- Get an internship. Film and television companies will offer internships in set design. Look around and see what internships interest you and apply. If you are a hard and consistent intern, they may offer you a job at the end of your internship.
