How to Make a Designer Handbag

Making a designer handbag can be a fun, creative project for anyone, even teens. You don't have to start from scratch either, but you may if you like. There are many patterns that are designer-influenced and can be tailored to your liking.

Items Needed:

  • Pattern

  • Sewing Notions

  • Sewing machine

  • Good Scissors

  1. Leaf through pattern books at a sewing center or peruse the web sites of pattern companies like Vogue. You can even find Vogue patterns for designer handbags on eBay and at Wal-Mart.

  2. View the back of the pocket that holds the pattern.

  3. Reference the list of sewing notions as listed there and get everything listed. The list tells you everything you'll need to complete your designer handbag. You may need a special tool to attach snap buttons depending upon your handbags closure, so be aware of that.

  4. Choose any fabric design you like, but do follow the instructions regarding the best type of fabrics to use, such as cotton blends, velour, leather or denim.

  5. Study the instructions included in your pattern. They will guide you through laying out fabric, which pattern pieces to cut out, how to lay patterns to make the most use of fabric and assembly.

  6. Follow the instructions as described: cut out your pattern pieces; lay out your fabric as instructed; lay the pieces out; and carefully cut them out.

  7. Thread a bobbin with the same thread you are sewing your designer handbag, and then thread the sewing machine accordingly. If you don't know how to thread the machine, refer to your owner's manual.

  8. Begin assembling your pieces as instructed. Remember that if you make a mistake with sewing a seam, you can remove the seam. However, holes from the needle may remain in leather, so read twice, sew once.

  9. Follow the instructions until your designer handbag is complete.
