How to Limit Internet Speed

Typically, a computer and Internet user will want to use the maximum Internet speed for optimum user experience and efficiency. However, there are instances when the user will want to be able to limit the Internet speed. This is done by adjusting the system bandwidth.

A computer's Internet speed is controlled by the bandwidth level of the system. The bandwidth determines the amount of information that is passed from the Internet to the computer itself. In general, only 80 percent of a computer's available bandwidth is used. This is to allow for the possibility of a computer containing only enough memory to run at less than maximum speed. Further adjusting the bandwidth setting will allow for even more precise limiting of the computer's Internet speed. Adjusting the bandwidth is a relatively simple task that can be completed by any computer user with just a few simple steps.

  1. Click on the "Start" icon and select "Run." This will cause a black window screen to pop up.

  2. Type in "gpedit.msc" in the box and hit Enter. This will cause the Windows Group Policy page to open up.

  3. Click on "Computer Configuration."

  4. Click on "Administrative Templates."

  5. Click on "Network."

  6. Click on "QOS Package Scheduler." This will cause a new display window to appear on the right.

  7. Click on "Limit Reservable Bandwidth." This will open a window with the bandwidth properties.

  8. Click on "Settings." Look for the bandwidth percent limiter in the middle of the screen. The standard setting is 20 percent. Adjust the amount as necessary.

  9. Click "OK."
