How to Loosen Earwax
Earwax does serve a purpose, but when it's allowed to build up it can have a damaging effect on hearing. Loosening earwax isn't difficult. You need to use caution when you're working near your ear canal because it can be easily damaged. With a few simple household items you can clear away earwax that may be causing you difficulties.
The body produces earwax as a way to keep damaging debris out of the ear canal. When earwax hardens it can cause pain and hearing loss. There may be times when it becomes necessary to clear this out.
- Remove piercings that may be blocking the ear canal. Alternative ear piercings like the tragus or rook are becoming more popular. The problem is these can block the wax from draining out of your ears like it should. If you can remove these at night before you go to bed you'll have fewer problems.
- Use olive oil to loosen the wax. Dip a cotton swab in a small amount of olive oil and let this drip in to your ear canal. It may feel strange, but the olive oil will soften up any hardened earwax. You need to lean your head to the side so the oil will stay in your ear for 15 to 20 minutes. Then tip your head back the other direction to allow the oil to drain. Clean your ear as you normally would to remove the oil and wax.
- Make a mix of baking soda and glycerin. In a small bowl add 2 teaspoons of glycerin and 1 teaspoon of baking soda. Mix this well and use a clean ear dropper to add a few drops in to your ears. This will also loosen hardened wax.
- Make regular appointments with an audiologist. An audiologist specializes in hearing and conditions of the ear. If they see a build up of hardened wax they will remove it and show you methods to reduce the amount that builds up. Most insurance plans will cover yearly visits to this type of doctor.
