How to Reduce Earwax Buildup Naturally

How to Prevent Earwax Buildup

Earwax is a naturally-occurring, sticky substance that originates in the inner ear. Its purpose is to keep infections from the ear canal and prevent ear dryness from occurring. This substance naturally manages to work itself from the ear although build-up can occur and result in decreased hearing. There are steps that you can take however, to prevent wax build-up from occurring.

  1. Wipe the outer shell of your ear only, using a soft cloth or a cotton swab. Refrain from sticking a swab or any other object in your ear as this can shove wax back and cause build-up.

  2. Put a drop or two of mineral oil in each ear if you tend to have a problem with ear wax hardening or building up. The oil will help to keep the wax soft so that it can come out on its own, as it should. An alternative to mineral oil is to put a few drops that consist of a mixture of warm water and hydrogen peroxide in each ear.

  3. Dry your outer ear thoroughly after you come out of the water from a swim or taking a shower. This can be done with a towel or by using a hair dryer that is set on the coolest setting. If there are no towels or a hair dryer, shake your head to remove excess.

  4. See your family doctor regularly, at least every six months, to have your ears checked. This is particularly important if you have a history of wax problems. Your doctor will have the tools to look inside your ears and clean them if necessary.
