How to Maintain a Leather Jacket

A nice leather jacket is an investment you want to keep looking sharp. Leather jackets need proper care and maintenance to continue looking their best. By knowing how to properly maintain your leather jacket you can wear it for years to come.

1. Avoid extreme climates and adverse weather conditions. If you are caught in a downpour and your jacket becomes soaked you will need to hang it on a sturdy hanger and allow it to air dry. Do not put it in the dryer, as the heat will damage the leather. If it is hot outside and you plan on leaving your jacket in your car, keep it out the sunlight. The trunk is probably the best place to store it for a short time if you cannot take it inside with you.

2. Clean your leather jacket periodically. Use leather cleaner or conditioner and a soft cloth. Place a small amount of product on the cloth and gently work in a circular motion until the product is absorbed. Wipe the jacket clean with another dry cloth. This will remove any excess product that may be left behind. If your leather jacket seems particularly dirty or has not been cleaned for a while, consider taking it to a professional cleaner. They will use products specially formulated to revitalize the leather.

3. Store your leather jacket properly. When not in use, you should store your leather jacket in the closet. It should be placed on a sturdy hanger. If you do not plan on using it for an extended length of time, you should loosely place it in a storage bag or create one from a garbage bag. This will keep dust from accumulating on your jacket. You should never store a leather jacket folded in a box. The closet you place your jacket in should be dry. Do not store your jacket in a damp basement or hot attic.
