How to Remove Smoke Smell from a Leather Jacket

Cigarette smoke is an offensive odor that lingers in fabric. Leather is one of the hardest materials to clean and manage, so when smoke and leather combine it can be a recipe for disaster. If your leather jacket smells of smoke there are some steps you can follow to remove it.

What you will need:

  • Saddle soap or leather soap

  • Clean cloth

  • Vinegar

  • Water

  • Spray bottle

  • Baking soda

  • Vacuum

  • Activated charcoal

  • Clean socks

  • Large plastic bag

  • Newspaper

  1. Wipe your leather jacket with saddle or leather soap using a clean cloth.

  2. Use a damp cloth to wipe the jacket, then wipe the jacket dry.

  3. Take the jacket outside and hang up to let it air dry. Do not put it in direct sunlight as that can fade the color of your jacket. Leave the jacket outside for two two three hours.

  4. Bring the jacket back inside and mix water and vinegar in a spray bottle and mist the jacket.

  5. Wipe down the jacket with a clean cloth and set it outside in the shade again.

  6. Bring the jacket inside again and sprinkle baking soda all over it. Let the jacket sit overnight before continuing.

  7. Use a vacuum to remove the baking soda and the smell from the jacket.

  8. Take two or three clean socks and fill then with activated charcoal.

  9. Put the charcoal filled socks and the leather jacket into a large plastic bag and leave overnight.

  10. Wrap newspaper around the jacket and leave it for 1 to 2 days.

  11. Repeat each step as much as necessary to remove the smoke smell from your jacket. You may find that the odor is gone from the jacket before you get to step 11. You can stop anytime you feel the odor is gone from your jacket.
