How to Wash a Leather Jacket

Leather jackets are popular today.  However, they are also expensive and require a lot of maintenance.  Whenever they are properly taken care of, they will last for many years.  This is something that a lot of people really appreciate about them.

Things That You Will Need

  • A washcloth

  • Some baby wipes

  • Leather cleaning spray

  • A tub of lukewarm water

  • Some dishwashing liquid

  1. Read all of the care instructions that are found on the label.  Make sure to follow these instructions carefully.

  2. Use a damp washcloth or some baby wipes to wipe off the outer part of your jacket.

  3. Spray a leather cleaner on any stained areas.  Make sure that the cleaner doesn’t have a water base.

  4. Rub the stain gently with a soft washcloth.  Make sure that the cloth isn’t abrasive as you don’t want it to scratch the leather.

  5. Hand wash your jacket with lukewarm water and mild, liquid dishwashing soap.  Simply soak your jacket in a small tub of water that is filled with the dishwashing liquid before gently rubbing the stained area in a circular motion.  Allow your jacket to air-dry.

  6. Take your jacket to a professional dry cleaner to have it washed for you.  This way you know that the jacket is not going to be damaged beyond repair.  A word of caution here though: some types of leather can be rather expensive to clean but this is the best way to maintain the jacket’s integrity.
