How to Maintain a Pond Skating Rink

Pond skating rinks are notorious for their never-ending fun and adventure. Keep your pond safe while skating by maintaining it correctly. Use tools you may already have on hand to remove debris and to keep the pond skating rink as “icey” as possible.

  1. Keep all debris away from the pond skating rink. Since it is most likely winter and everything is covered in snow, keep all unsafe objects off of the pond. Some people like to keep their paddleboats attached to the dock of the pond, but it is best to remove the boat and put it in proper storage.  Remove all sticks and leaves to keep skaters from tripping by accident.

  2. Remove all snow from the pond skating rink. You should have already removed all other debris, but you must also remove the snow. Snow prevents a skater from skating on the rink with ease. Take a shovel across the pond and slowly remove all excess snow. You can store the snow on the side of the pond for safekeeping.

  3. Use freezing temperatures to create the actual skating rink. As the temperatures get colder, you must now prepare your pond skating rink with actual ice. Your pond will freeze by itself but it is best to add an extra thick layer of ice.

  4. Pour water on the skating rink when temperatures are very low. Pond skating safety measures require there to be a thick layer of ice before skating. Adding this layer of frozen water will help prevent thin ice on the pond skating rink.

  5. Test out the pond skating rink. Make sure to test the safety of the pond skating rink before allowing younger children on the ice.
