How to Make Baby Dresses

Making baby dresses can be a fairly cheap and easy rainy day project at home. Whether you want to make a dress for your own baby, or make a few dresses to give away as gifts, you will find they are surprisingly simple to make.

  1. Go to your local fabric store and browse the fabric selections. Seeing the fabrics in person will help you decide if you'd like to make a summery frock or a warm winter sweater dress. You never know exactly what you're going to make until you can see the choices before you.

  2. Look at the pattern choices they have in stock. Sometimes the pattern you choose will dictate the type of fabric that should be used. You may also find some inspiration in the design samples strewn about the store.

  3. Ask one of the customer service associates to assist you in getting the proper amount of fabric. They will know exactly how much to cut based on the pattern style you've chosen.

  4. Make sure you know what size you need to make for the baby who will be wearing the dress. It is always a good rule of thumb to make the dress two times the age of the baby. So, if the baby is 3 months old, make the dress a size 6 months. This will give the baby plenty of time to get lots of enjoyment out of the dress.

  5. Follow the pattern packet's instructions for cutting, tracing, and sewing the dress. The packet will break down your project into very simple, easy to follow steps.
