How to Make Onesie Baby Dresses

Gerber Childrenswear LLC owns the trademark name, Onesies®. The United States calls them snapsuits, diaper suits and creepers. England calls them babygro. Bodysuits wear like t-shirts that extend to the crotch and close with snaps or velcro. Onesies can be very fashionable attire for babies. An attached skirt makes them beautiful.

Things You Need

  • Bodysuit (1)

  • Fabric for ruffle (1/4 yard)

  • Fabric (cotton, 1/3 yard)

  • Scissors

  • Thread

  • Pins

  • Ruler

  • Sewing Machine

  1. Measure across the front of the bodysuit, where you want the skirt top to be. It could be under the arms for an empire waist, at the waistline for a shirtwaist or lower for a low waist.

  2. Measure the length of the bodysuit. Place the measuring tape end on the spot where you measured the width. Measure to the bottom of the bodysuit.

  3. Multiply the width measurement by four.

  4. Cut your material across, using the measurement in step three.

  5. Cut the material longer than the length measurement in step two. Subtract two inches from the skirt length, if you want a ruffle.

  6. Multiply the width measurement result in step three by 1.5. Use that width measurement to cut across the fabric for the ruffle.

  7. Cut the ruffle fabric around three-inches long. Add 1/2-inch for the top seam and 1/2-inch for the hem.

  8. Sew the skirt side seams together. Leave a 1/2-inch seam allowance.

  9. Sew the ruffle side seams together. Leave a 1/2-inch seam allowance.

  10. Turn the top of the skirt under 1/2-inch.

  11. Machine stitch around the skirt top.

  12. Gather the ruffle.

  13. Turn it inside out.

  14. Lay the ruffle on top of the skirt, with the right sides of the skirt and ruffle facing and meeting at the seams at the bottom.

  15. Pin the skirt and ruffle together. Neatly spread out the ruffle gathering.

  16. Machine stitch the ruffle and skirt together.

  17. Turn the ruffle over. It is now attached to the bottom of the skirt, facing you.

  18. Cut the elastic the width of the bodysuit multiplied by two.

  19. Place the elastic on the inside and near the top of the skirt.

  20. Pull on the elastic and pin in place.

  21. Machine stitch the elastic to the skirt.

  22. Attach the finished skirt straight around the bodysuit on the spot where you measured the bodysuit width in step 1.

  23. Machine stitch the bodysuit and skirt together. Make sure the bodysuit is flat, so it won't bunch up under the skirt.

  24. Turn the ruffle bottom under 1/2-inch.

  25. Hem stitch.
