How to Make Birthday Party Decorations
Whether you are throwing a party for your little one, or simply want to have a get together with you and your friends, party decorations add a bit of personality to the event. Making your own birthday decorations provides you and friends or family with a fun project to do, while spending quality time with each other.
Things You Will Need:
- Poster board
- Markers
- Brads
- Tacks
- Latex balloon
- Flour
- Water
- Paint brush
- Box cutter
- Tissue paper
- Scissors
- Elmer’s glue
- Pencil
- Candy
- String
Birthday Signs
- Draw individual block letters on poster board to spell out “Happy Birthday,” or the name of the birthday person, using a black marker or a pencil.
- Color the inside of the letters with colors that match the theme of the party, making sure that you stay inside the lines as much as possible. Alternate colors for every other letter, or for each word, to add a bit of fun to the area.
- Cut out each letter precisely along the lines you drew with a pair of scissors.
- Poke holes at the top corner of each letter on both sides with a brad. Use the brads to connect each letter with the next to complete your banner. If you are creating more than one word, make sure to keep the words separate from each other.
- Hang the sign on a location of your party room so that everyone can see your creation.
Piñatas
- Blow up a large balloon and tie the end so that it is secured. The shape of the balloon can be any shape you wish and does not have to be the standard circle balloon.
- Make paper mache out of flour and water by mixing the two ingredients together to make a paste. Use a paint brush to apply the mixture over the entire balloon until you have created a thick layer. Allow the balloon to dry overnight, before moving on to the next step.
- Cut a flap at the top of the balloon, once the paper mache is completely dry. It is easiest to cut with a box cutter, so that you have the exact shape you need.
- Add water to a bit of Elmer’s glue and apply a bit to the surface of the paper mache. Gently apply tissue paper to create a textured look on the piñata. Use the eraser end of a pencil to adhere the issue paper to the balloon. Allow the glue to dry.
- Fill the piñata with the candy of your choice. To make the game more interesting and with a twist, fill the piñata with other types of goodies for a special surprise.
- Make a hole at the top of the piñata and pull a strong piece of string or wire through to attach it to the ceiling.
