How to Make Custom Baby Bedding

With a baby comes the expense of having to buy all of the items that your child will need. By making your own custom baby bedding, you will save money on the high cost of bedding sets. Custom baby bedding will also allow you to design your nursery's theme exactly the way you want it. The fitted crib sheet pattern is simple enough for even beginners.

Things You'll Need:

  • Sewing machine

  • Scissors

  • 4 feet of elastic (cut into 4 strips of the same size)

  • 70-inch x 45-inch flannel or woven cotton

  1. Select the fabric that you'd like to use for your baby bedding and preshrink it by running it through the washing machine and dryer. Since this will be washed many times in the future, you'll want to make sure that it has already shrunk.

  2. Cut a 9-inch square off of your fabric from each corner of the cotton using your scissors.

  3. Sew the sight sides of the corners together using your sewing machine or by hand if you so choose.

  4. Fold up the edge of the fabric and sew a straight line all around the crib sheet. Many people choose to use either a zig zag or serger stitch.

  5. Take out your elastic and place it in the center of your corner seam. Sew it to this spot and continue to stretch it out while sewing it to the rest of the baby bedding sheet. The zig zag stitch is ideal for this portion.

  6. Test out your custom baby bedding by pulling it around the edges to make sure that it stretches.

  7. Fit the sheet over the crib mattress and enjoy your new custom bedding.
