How to Sew a Baby Bed Skirt
Crib bedskirts add a finished look to a crib's bedding set. A crib skirt is usually made to match the theme of the room. Some crib ensembles include bed skirts in their complete packages. But if your set did not include one, making it is an easy project. Extensive sewing skills are not required.
Supplies
- Crib mattress
- Tape measure
- Fabric for skirt ruffle, 3 yards
- Muslin, 1 1/2f yards
- Sewing machine
- Thread
- Scissors
- Pins
- Use measuring tape for the mattresses length and width. Crib mattresses are the standard 28 x 52-inches. Trim a piece of muslin to measure 27 1/2 x 51 1/2-inches.
- Make two rectangles 60 x 11-inches, which will be the width of the crib skirt.
- Trim out two more rectangles, 110 x 11-inches for the length of the crib skirt.
- Use the sewing machine to add a hem on all four pieces of the fabric. Fold the raw edge 1/4-inch and then again 1/4-inch, to hide the raw edge, then sew.
- Gather the hemmed skirt pieces and make the crib's ruffle. Use the sewing machine for this. Set it to a long basting stitch. Run the raw edges of material through, putting two rows of basting stitches across them. Pull the thread to make a ruffle. This must be done carefully to avoid breaking the thread. If it breaks, you will have to redo all the stitches.
- Lay out the material and even out the gathers. Fit the fabric around the original rectangle made in the first step.
- Put the right side of fabric with gathers around the edge of the muslin rectangle. Pin in place.
- Use the machine to stitch the gathered material and the rectangle together.
- Remove the crib mattress and lay the bedskirt against the springs and underneath the mattress, with the right side of the fabric exposed. Work it around so it hangs evenly around the bottom.
- Replace the mattress and bedding.
