How to Make Dishware
It's actually a simple process to make your own dishware, but it is also a long one. Even someone who is not experienced can do it, and you don't have to start with moldable clay like you did for your art projects in school. All you need to do is locate your local ceramic shop with dishware molds, and they will be happy to assist you through the process.
Tools Needed:
- Ceramic Painting Brushes
- Ceramic Cleaning Tools
- Call around to ceramic shops in your vicinity. If you have only one shop and they don't have dishware molds, you may be able to order the poured pieces from elsewhere and have them fired by your local shop.
- Visit with a nearby stoneware or porcelain potter if no ceramic shops are available. They can create what you want, or you may be able to take classes there to make your own dishware by hand. This will most likely be the most expensive route, though.
- Have the shop owner pour your pieces assuming a local ceramic shop has the molds. You can ask for permission to help, and you will learn how it's all done.
- Remove the mold seams from the poured pieces while the mud is still soft.
- Wait for the shop owner to dry the pieces in preparation for glazing.
- Pick out your glaze. The shop likely has a wide variety of food safe dinnerware glazes to choose from. They can probably special order it for you, too.
- Paint your prepared dinnerware.
- Take it to the ceramic shop for firing. This may take several days.
- Pick up your finished dishware and enjoy!
