How to Make Donuts

Donuts with powdered sugar

Donuts are a delicious occasional treat for children and adults alike. Although they are readily available at donut shops, bakeries and grocery stores, you can easily make them at home for your family to enjoy. Although the idea of making donuts might sound intimidating at first, once you learn how to make them it is simple to accomplish.

Ingredients

  • 2-1/4 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 egg

Instructions

  1. In a medium sized bowl, sift together 2-1/4 cups of flour, 2 teaspoons of baking powder and 1/4 teaspoon of salt.
  2. In a large mixing bowl beat 1 egg and 1/2 cup of white sugar until it is light and creamy.
  3. Add 1 tablespoon of melted butter, 1/2 cup of milk and a 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla. Beat well.
  4. Mix the dry ingredients, mixing it only until a soft dough forms.
  5. Place the dough on a floured surface and roll it out so that it is 3/8 of an inch thick. If you are having difficulty rolling the dough because of the softness, place it in the refrigerator for one hour to chill.
  6. Cut out your donuts using a donut cutter.
  7. Heat oil in a deep fryer.

  8. When the oil reaches 370 degrees, place several of your donuts into the deep fryer. Be careful not to overcrowd the fryer.
  9. Remove the donuts after turning them once. They should be golden brown on both sides. Place them on several sheets of absorbent paper towels to drain.
    1. Sprinkle warm donuts with powdered sugar, granulated sugar, a sugar-cinnamon mix or leave them as-is.
