How to Make Potpourri with Cinnamon Oil

Potpourri is wonderful used as room decor, but when paired with the pleasant scent of cinnamon oil, it makes a lovely air freshener for everyday use. Cinnamon oil potpourri can be made at home with a few materials and little time. It is easy to make and the results are rewarding.

Things you'll need:

  • Flowers

  • Herbs

  • Decorative natural ingredients (mini pinecones, cinnamon sticks, bark, etc.)

  • Cinnamon oil

  • Large jar with lid

  1. Collect the materials you'll need. You can choose any combination of flowers, herbs, and decorative natural ingredients you like. However, when choosing what flowers, herbs and decorative materials to make cinnamon oil potpourri with, consider what ingredients go well with cinnamon oil. A few great options are sunflower petals, daisy petals, orange or red rose petals, thyme, rosemary, pine needles, cloves, and tree bark.

  2. Dry the flowers and herbs. Lay the flowers and herbs in a clean, dry area at room temperature. The flowers and herbs do not need any help drying out, so let them sit until they are dry. This could be a few days to a few weeks depending on the type of herbs and flowers and how fresh they are when the drying process begins. You know they are dry when they become crisp.

  3. Break the petals and herbs from their steams. Be careful not to crush the flowers and herbs. A hardy, thick potpourri is best for scent and appearance.

  4. Place four drops of cinnamon oil into the bottom of a large jar.

  5. Place half of the flower petals, herbs, and decorative natural ingredients into the large jar.

  6. Place another four drops of cinnamon oil in the jar on top of the ingredients.

  7. Fill the rest of the jar with the remaining flower petals, herbs, and decorative natural ingredients. Leave a few inches of space at the top of the jar.

  8. Place another four drops of cinnamon oil on top of the ingredients.

  9. Close the jar tight with a lid.

  10. Gently shake the jar to mix the cinnamon oil into the ingredients. Do not over shake and cause the ingredients to break into pieces. If you are afraid shaking the jar will cause too much damage to the ingredients, lightly tip the jar over from top to bottom a few times to distribute the oil.

  11. Set the jar on a table and let it sit for a month to let the cinnamon oil sink into the ingredients and create a fragrant cinnamon oil potpourri.

  12. Open the jar and test the scent of the potpourri. If you would like a stronger scent, drop more cinnamon oil into the jar, close the lid, shake it, and let it sit for another few weeks. Repeat the process until the potpourri has reached the desired strength.

  13. Open the jar and sit the potpourri in the room you would like to fill with the cinnamon oil scent.

  14. You now have potpourri!
