How to Make Prom Tuxedos for Men
Prom is a black tie event that most high schools hold at the end of the school year. Girls will wear formal evening gowns while the guys wear tuxedos. Unfortunately, it can be quite expensive to purchase a tuxed, so you may want to create your own.
Things You'll Need
- A pattern
- Some fabric and thread
- Buttons and a zipper
- A pair of scissors
- Pins
- A sewing machine
- Visit a formal men’s wear shop to get ideas on types of colors and fabrics for tuxedos. Decide what pattern you want to use. These patterns are available at your local craft shop, as well as online. If you don’t find all of the tuxedo pieces that you like in one pattern, you may have to purchase several patterns.
- Purchase the fabric (the amount will depend upon your size so check your pattern) and other materials (i.e. matching thread, buttons, a zipper for the pants, felt for the collar’s lining, polyester or satin for lining) that you will need in order to make the tuxedo. The most commonly used materials include wool or gabardine for jackets and pants and silk, polyester or satin for vests, cummerbunds and ties.
- Take your pattern pieces out of the packaging.
- Cut along the solid edges of your pattern, making sure to cut it in the size that will fit you.
- Smooth the wrinkles out of your pattern.
- Position the pattern cutouts onto your fabric pieces and pin them together.
- Follow the edges of the paper to cut out your fabric. Leave the patterns attached so that you will be able to tell the pieces apart.
- Follow the directions on the packaging in order to complete the tuxedo. Make sure to only work on one piece at a time.
