How to Make Race Cars for Kids

Building a toy race car with your kids can be fun and educational at the same time. It encourages developmental motor skills as well as family togetherness. Using some basic supplies from around the house you can easily build a toy race car.

Supplies:

  • Empty 20-ounce or smaller soda bottle, or a box

  • Paint, construction paper, stickers

  • Two skewers

  • Four small plastic plates, big buttons or empty thread spools for the wheels

  • Scissors, knife or blade to make holes

  1. Clean out the soda bottle or cardboard box for the body of your car. If there are any labels, you can peel them off to make the car look cleaner and smoother.

  2. Lay your car’s body on its side and make two holes in each side, one toward the front of the bottle or box, and one toward the rear. Make sure that the holes line up with each other across the body and are big enough to fit the skewers through. The skewers should fit snuggly in the holes.

  3. Cut the skewers so that they go through the car with about one inch on either side sticking out of the bottle or box.

  4. Make holes in the middle of your plates so that they will go through the skewers. Place your plates, buttons or spools on the four ends of the skewers. Apply a little bit of tape to the very tip of the sticks to block the wheels from falling off.

  5. Decorate your car’s body as you wish. You can use your paints to color it or use construction paper to cut out shapes and glue them on. You may also want to use stickers, markers or glitter to add more personal touches.
