How to Make Regular Eyewear Into Reading Eyewear

Starting in your forties there begins a change in your near vision that makes it difficult to read objects up close. This change is called presbyopia. For some, the idea of wearing bifocal eyeglasses is not a desirable option, nor is switching between reading glasses and distance or sunglasses. When this is the case there is a way to make regular eyewear into reading glasses.

  1. Buy stick-on lenses such as Optx 20/20 or Seemores in the magnification that you need. The lowest power that you will need is +1.25 and the highest available power will be a +3.00. These are available online or at certain brick and mortar retail stores.

  2. Clean the lenses of your sunglasses or prescription eyewear when you are ready to apply the stick-ons. Make certain that your fingers are clean and that you are using warm water and no soaps with lotion or oils.

  3. Rinse the lenses and while wet affix the stick-on lens on the bottom half of your glasses. They should be situated so that the rounded portion is facing down toward the bottom of your glasses and the flat portion is facing upwards.

  4. Put on the glasses while they are still wet. Pick up a book, magazine or any print material and attempt to read it at a distance that feels comfortable and natural. If the lens feels too high or low slide the lens with your finger.

  5. Use a clean lint-free towel to press the water from beneath the lens once you are certain it is properly situated. Do not use tissue or paper towels as these may scratch the lenses of your actual glasses.

  6. Leave the glasses sitting lens side up for approximately 12 hours to dry thoroughly and set.
