How to Make Simple Horse Training Equipment

Many people love to work with horses. Some enjoy pleasure riding while others love to compete. Regardless of the way you use your horse, you will need the right equipment to keep up the training so that when you are working with them they will understand what you are asking of them.

Things You'll Need:

  • Nylon rope (length will depend on what is needed for your project)

  • Brass clip

  1. Gather your equipment by first making a list of what you will need and divide them into groups according to the strength of the material that will be required. Materials that come in direct contact with the horse's body must be durable and waterproof.

  2. Buy ¼ inch mildew and rot-resistant double braided nylon rope. This will be used to make halters and other such items.

  3. Take a measurement of your horse from just under the cheekbone but above the nose. This measurement will be used to determine the length of rope to purchase. As a rule of thumb, small ponies measure about 20 inches and it will take approximately 18 feet of rope for the halter. Standard size horses typically measure about 24 inches and require approximately 22 feet or rope.

Make the Halter

  1. Make a loop that is a half inch larger than the nose of your horse, and tie a couple of double overhand knots that are one half of the distance of the horses nose apart. This will create a doubles rope. There should be two equal rope pieces on each side.

  2. Measure from the base of the throat to the spot the loop will be sitting. Use an overhand knot to combine two more pieces of rope at this spot.

  3. Use another knot just under the right ear which connects a piece of the nose loop rope to one at the throat latch, and then repeat for the other side.

  4. Take both rope pieces from the knot at the right ear in your hand and tie them to the left ear knot with a latch knot. Braid or twist the rest of the rope so that there is no fraying.

Make a Lunge Line

  1. Cut 25 to 30 feet of nylon rope and attach a brass clip to it at one end, braiding it securely.

  2. Tie a double knot 10 feet from the other end, and tie another one at five feet then one foot from the rope end.

  3. Use these knots to help determine the length of rope you are using as you are training your horse.
